Welcome

This site offers information and practical videos relating to our physiology, and how we can influence it - for improved mental and physical health - using specific breathing approaches and ways of focusing attention. This all sits inside a larger framework of what we require as humans to function well based on biological and social science research.I am a GP with 15 years NHS clinical experience and an interest in practical self regulation tools and skills that can be fitted into day to day life. It is different to the purely 'medical approach' and different to talking therapies. It does not replace, but complements them. More like 'practical' physiology, or 'getting back to the basics'. I'm interested in this as there is such a lot to be gained from getting the foundations in place, that can then make whatever other approaches - be it therapy, medication, or anything else - more helpful. Thinking of things in this way can also help people make sense of their experience - not through a medical lens, but an understanding of our bodies, and what we require, and how we often feel as humans when the different areas get out of balance. This is provided free as I want to get the information to as many people as might benefit from it. Its based on medical training, clinical experience, breathing instructor training (Heartmath, 'The Breathing Class', breathing science related to CO2 balance), and additional training in psychological approaches (Human Givens Diploma) and mental health (Diploma in primary care and community mental health). It is available for patients I see in clinic to make use of as best fits them, as well as anybody else who might find it helpful.I have also written 'mental health resources' giving clear information about mental health conditions and their treatments at www.gpmentalhealth.uk.It will start slowly as I'm fitting this around clinical work and teaching and I will gradually add to it over time.Dr Adam Lake
